By Sarah Warren, Former EHCP Plan Writer and Caseworker

I am a former SEND Teacher, Caseworker, and EHC Plan Writer, heartened by the government’s recently opened SEND Crisis Review. This review invites opinions on the processes within Local Authority SEND departments with the intention of improving outcomes for children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). The quality of an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) is crucial in ensuring that a child with SEND receives the support they need.

Currently, EHC Plans are created manually by overburdened caseworkers. As a result, these plans can sometimes fail to fully address the specific needs of children, meaning the necessary support is not outlined in the EHCP or provided in educational settings. By leveraging AI to speed up and enhance the creation of EHCPs, caseworkers can ensure a more consistent and accurate process, capturing all the necessary information from professional reports to ensure EHC Plans are personalised and of high quality every time.

AI tools can help to standardise the drafting of EHCPs by automatically integrating data from various sources—such as medical reports, educational assessments, and social care reports. This process takes a matter of minutes rather than hours of manual work. This will undoubtedly lead to reduced strain on Local Authority SEND services and provide reassurance to families going through the EHCP process with their child. This aligns with parents’ and the public’s calls for a more efficient, equitable system of support for children with SEND.

Agilisys Transform’s EHCP tool has been designed to write EHC Plans to specific council templates, fine-tuned and personalised to each child, improving the quality and consistency of EHCPs across each Local Authority.
